Like volunteering in Ireland, volunteering abroad creates many opportunities for new physiotherapists to develop and utilise their skills in different areas of physiotherapy with the added bonus of experiencing a new culture in the process. There are many advantages of volunteering in a different country as a physiotherapist:
- Experience new areas of physiotherapy, expose yourself to different diseases and management programmes
- Meet a variety of challenges, that come with working in an underdeveloped community
- Great chance to conduct research that will be novel
- Opportunity to travel and experience different cultures
- Take on greater responsibility than as a basic grade in an acute setting in Ireland, as often you will be the only physiotherapist on site.
- Develop skills in leadership and flexibility, while building on communication and treatment skills
UCD Volunteers Overseas was established in 2003 and since its inception has carried out projects in Delhi, Uganda, Tanzania, Niger, Nicaragua, South India and Haiti, with projects in education, physiotherapy, construction, environmental, healthcare and computer training.

UCDVO’s Mission is to provide UCD students, staff and alumni with opportunities to volunteer for the benefit of disadvantaged communities overseas, in response to needs explicitly identified by those communities.
