Registration
Two different organisations are involved in registration:
1) The Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC), which is the national standards advisory body and oversees assessment of the qualifications of overseas-qualified physiotherapists, seeking registration to practice in Australia. It also oversees the Australian Physiotherapy Competency Standards.
2) Physiotherapy Board of Australia (PBA), which works in conjunction with the Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency to maintain a register of health professionals.
Step 1: Accreditation
Can be done in two ways;
Assessment for general registration: Steps involved (see further details in exam process section)
Step 2: Registration
Once you have the APC final certificate, following the three step process outline above you can apply to PBA for general registration.
Physiotherapy board of Australia: Assessment for skilled migration:
Physiotherapists must be registered with the Physiotherapist Board of Australia and meet the boards registration standards in order to practice in Australia. Registration renewal date is 30th November annually. The Australian Physiotherapy Council assesses qualifications and skills for the occupation of physiotherapists for the purpose of skilled migration under the Department of Immigration and Citizenship skilled migration program (DIAC) -Not an assessment for registration purposes. DIAC consider your skilled employment for the purpose of awarding points for the allocation of a point based visa system

- Assessment of equivalence of qualification: For applicants who believe that their qualification is substantially equivalent to an accredited entry level Australian physiotherapy programme - UCD found to be NOT equivalent
- Assessment for general registration: (The assessment process has three stages: The initial assessment, the written examination and the clinical assessment- see more details below)

- Supply evidence of your physiotherapy qualification and that you are registered and authorised to practice in your country of training
- Once the evidence is accepted you must sit a written exam based on the content and scope of a newly qualified physiotherapist in Australia.
- If you pass the written exam and are issued an APC interim Certificate. This is valid for 12 months and permits you to apply to take the compulsory clinical examination and work under supervision to help you prepare for the exam by providing hands on experience of physiotherapy practice in Australia. The clinical exam involves assessing and treating three patients from cardiorespiratory, neurology and musculoskeletal areas. The clinical exam must be taken in Australia.

Cost:
- Assessment for general registration: Part 1 initial component $1100.00, part 2: Written component $1900.00 and part three clinical component application for clinical assessment $4050.00. Total $7050 (€4894.46)
- Application fee for general registration $179 (A candidate who successfully completes the three part assessment process, will be granted a final certificate which can be used to meet one of the requirements for general registration with the physiotherapy board of Australia)
- Administration fee when application is returned in Australia $55.00 and overseas $110.00
- Internal review fee $550.00
- Skills assessment for migration purposes with qualifications and skilled employment assessment $1650.00
- Membership for Graduates year 1, which is graduates within 11 months of course completion, the rate is $396
